To say that my boys LOVE the movie Polar Express would be an understatement! They're obsessed right now and watch it at least once a day.
Friday morning we dropped Jeremiah off at his office so he could see a few patients. And while he did that I stopped at Walmart with the kids to get our oil changed and shop for a few things, like a last minute winter coat for Aliya-they didn't have ANY not one and snow just happened to be in our forecast. It was a very stressful trip to the store with all three of the kids. I had to wait forever just to get checked in at the auto department then I had to return 3 box's of Christmas ornaments that my husband didn't need for his office (the boys kept dropping them on the floor), while in the customer service line Noah stared crying because he had to go to the bathroom so bad, Aliyas seat buckle was broken so she kept trying to get out, Joshua dropped his buddy buck on the floor and wouldn't stopped crying until I went back to get it. Lets just say I was fighting my flesh not to completely LOOSE my cool. I wanted this day to be perfect-full of good memories not ones with me snapping at my kids!b
By the time we were walking out from our Walmart escapade my deodorant must have been working on overdrive because I was sweating bullets from the stress of it all. i was hoping this wasn't a sign of what the rest of our weekend would look like.
As soon as we were all packed up in the car and headed back towards Jeremiahs office snowflakes began to fall. You could hardly see them at first but as we kept driving they got heavier and heavier. By the time we got to Jeremiahs office at around (1PM I think it was) it was almost a white out, in TEXAS! Very crazy. I felt very happy for my boys to be able to see it! None of it stuck to the ground but as quickly as it came it went-it was so fun while it lasted though!
Next we were on our way. We stopped at Burger King for lunch, not our favorite but it was the closest and we were starving! The kids were absolutely perfect the whole three hours. They didn't make a peep seriously, not a peep! They slept and stared out the window. I was amazed and wondering how I can replicate it for our flight home to NY this month.
We got to our motel in the absolute middle of nowhere and unpacked our stuff. I totally over packed because of those dang Austin news men who tricked this Yankee into thinking we were going to be snowed into our Motel. It was very cold though-I'll give them that! Did I mention that that the motel was utterly disgusting and dirty-I think I am officially on the top 100 wives list now.
After all that we drove around to go see where Jeremiah would be hunting the next two days. I have to tell you that East Texas (where we were anyway) was absolutely beautiful! It had rolling hills and lots of pine trees, I actually felt like we were in the country in Upstate NY.
It was dark and very cold out when we finally got to the Polar Express. We were all bundled up-Aliya even had on three jackets because she doesn't have just one thick winter coat yet.
We were cutting it close when we got there and pretty much ran to our seats! We were all so excited. It was better than I ever dreamed it would be Texas railways did an amazing job making it feel just like you were in the movie. They had servers come out dancing to the movie soundtrack and pass out hot chocolate and cookies. Then they had the whole story read over the loud speakers as one of the servers walked up and down the aisles showing the books illustrations. Next it was time for the kids to look out their windows as the train was stopping to a see a beautiful Christmas light presentation of the "North Pole". At this point we changed directions. As we were making our way back, the "conductor" came out to stamp every ones ticket (just like in the movie). Noah loved that part. Christmas carols were being sung by young and old as servers danced in the aisles with the children!! Then the grand finale Santa came out to greet the children and gave each of them a silver bell.
My heart was so full that night watching my children's faces, they were in heaven. It was all so magical for them. Thier eyes were like saucers. I would catch eyes with each of the boys and they would look at me with this face that was in awe.
I have to give mad props to Aliya-she was a trooper the entire weekend and never fussed once-truly-she is such a blessing.
It was the MOST fun! I want to do it again. The boys were the perfect age this year-I'm so glad we did it!
Oh and Jeremiah did get a deer on his last day hunting so-it was a successful trip! I'll just try to forget about the motel that looked like it came straight out of a scary movie!
P.S.-because I do not yet have an external flash for my camera and because it was extremely dark outside and on the train, I unfortunately missed some really good shots of the boys smiling with Santa-boo! But I'm glad I got some cute captures despite that fact.
